While Rosemount started in the Hunter valley and the orginal Denman site, during the 1980’s and 1990’s a strategic program of purchasing and establishing a series of vineyards across Australia allowed Rosemount to match various grapes with their ideal soil and climate conditions. Crucially, in 1991, Bob committed to p urchasing the 100-year-old “Ryecroft” winery in McLaren Vale, South Australia. This secured access to rare old-vine vineyards from which to fashion a new Australian classic and Rosemount Estate’s flagship red wine in the Balmoral Syrah – a wine destined for greatness if matured in bottle, yet a delight to drink young upon release.
The Oatley family continued to make highly valuable inroads as one of the world’s leading producers of fine wines through the purchase of Langhorn Creek Vineyards in 1993, Adelaide Hills Vineyard in 1994 and the acquisition of land in the Mudgee region with the purchase of the Mountain Blue Vineyard in 1995.
