Vintage 2013
Wine Type Red
Varietal Cabernet Sauvignon
Region Napa Valley
Winemaker Mark Beringer

Chabot Vineyard lies east of the Silverado Trail, just north of the road that leads up Howell Mountain to Bancroft Ranch and Steinhauer Ranch.  The chunks of shiny obsidian heavily strewn through its soil reflect the locale, known as “Glass Mountain.”  An underlying layer of pumice and bedrock ensures excellent drainage.  The inky, highly structured, deeply flavored Cabernet from this vineyard was the first that Beringer Vineyards elected to bottle as a Private Reserve, in 1977, and we have continued to bottle a small amount each year since as a single-vineyard Cabernet. Chabot Cabernet has finely knit tannins, and layers of black currant with hints of m int and cedar. The 2013 Chabot was harvested between October 5th and 16th and aged for 20 months in 80% new French oak barrels. 100% Chabot Cabernet, 240 cases produced.

95 Points, Wine Advocate

“The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Chabot Vineyard has oodles of chocolate and cassis fruit. They all can be approached early on (3-4 years), but will age for 25+ years.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

93 Points, Vinous Media

"The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Chabot Vineyard, from a site at the base of Howell Mountain, is dark, powerful and voluptuous. Iron, smoke, grilled herbs and wild flowers are all pushed forward, while the fruit lies more in the background. Savory and intense, the Chabot offers an intriguing interplay of structure and nuance. It will be interesting to see if the forbidding tannins soften with further time in bottle." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Vintage Notes

The 2013 vintage began with a warm, dry spring and relatively early bud break. Summer was notably consistent with even, warm temperatures throughout. Harvest began quite early in August, and by September the majority of whites and lighter reds were completely off the vines. Cool yet sunny weather in October allowed the final grapes on the vine to linger and develop great phenolic and flavor maturities while maintaining steady sugar levels. Overall, it was a high quality crop that was above average in quantity.
