The wine for this exclusive bottling was selected from our favorite barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from Napa Valley’s Rutherford AVA. Hand sorting the grapes on tables at the winery, both before and after destemming, ensured the highest quality. Definitely cellar worthy, this wine will gain complexity for more than a decade and will then remain on a plateau for many more years.

"A juiciness of cherry and vanilla spark the opening of this wine, a celebration of the vintage, appellation and in this case, fruit-forwardness of the variety. With a backbone of oak and cedar, it has smooth tannins and medium weight, finishing in mocha chocolate. Drink now through 2022." - Virginie Boone, February 2016
Our Barrel-Select Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon reflects Napa Valley’s iconic 2012 vintage with its profoundly concentrated flavors and generous, round, tannin structure. The saturated, black cherry and juicy, brambly blackberry aromas are layered with hints of cassis, brioche, violet and bergamot tea. The expansive palate is weighty and richly textured, with dark-fruit character that lingers through the finish. Aging in French oak barrels gave the wine its harmonious balance of oak and fruit expression; while Rutherford Dust tannins and vibrant acidity provide an elegant structure.
Since the quality of a wine begins in the vineyard, it’s no surprise that the barrels we’ve selected for this wine come from exceptional sites in the heart of Napa Valley. The wine is sourced entirely from vineyards located in the Rutherford American Viticultural Area (AVA): Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III and our Wildwood Estate Vineyard are located on the eastern side; our Provenance Estate Vineyard is on the west. The soils in these three vineyards are remarkably different, which adds to the terroir complexity in the wine.
The relaxed, high-quality 2012 harvest was a winemaker’s dream. The ideal growing season—well-timed rains, no frost during bud break, and perfect weather for bloom, berry-set and ripening—was textbook Napa Valley. Long stretches of sunny days coupled with foggy nights gave our 2012 wines exceptionally rich, expressive flavors and impeccable balance. We had no weather pressures, from either pending rains or excessive heat, to rush the harvest. Instead, we had the luxury of waiting until the grapes reached absolutely perfect maturity.
After hand harvesting the fruit and then hand sorting it twice at the winery, we gently destemmed the grapes to retain at least 60 percent whole berries. Three days of cold soaking before fermentation gently extracted the opulent color and flavors from the skins. Two to three weeks of skin contact developed varietal expression while, in-barrel malolactic fermentation rounded the acidity. Aging in a high percentage of new oak barrels married the rich Cabernet Sauvignon flavors with warm oak tones.
