The wine for this exclusive bottling was selected from our favorite barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from Napa Valley’s Rutherford AVA. Hand sorting the grapes on tables at the winery, both before and after destemming, ensured the highest quality. Definitely cellar worthy, this wine will gain complexity for more than a decade and will then remain on a plateau for many more years. To enjoy it in its youth, decant this Cabernet Sauvignon and let it breathe to release the full spectrum of flavors and textures.
Barrel Aging: 22 Months, 100% French Oak (60% New)
Varietal Composition: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Production: 264 cases
"The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Select is a smaller cuvée of 264 cases made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 50% new French oak for 22 months. Soft, round and juicy, with notes of road tar, forest floor, unsmoked cigar tobacco, crème de cassis and black cherries with a touch of fruitcake and allspice, this is a beauty to drink over the next 20–25 years." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, October 2016
"Spicy clove, pepper and a crunch of tannin characterize this full-bodied, 100% varietal wine that feels both leathery and herbal. Cassis and red currant notes add crispness and a wisp of fruit that grows darker and more chocolaty as it finishes." - Virginie Boone, May 2017
Complex nuances of violet and sassafras weave through the generous blackberry and cassis aromas and flavors of our 2013 Barrel-Select Rutherford Cabernet. Subtle notes of wild sage and earthy truffle appear as the wine evolves in the glass. The expansive palate is weighty and richly textured, with dark-fruit character that lingers through the finish. Aging in new French oak barrels added hints of ginger-spice and toasty espresso to the wine’s harmonious fruit and oak balance, while Rutherford Dust tannins and vibrant acidity provide the wine’s elegant, yet firm, structure.
Since the quality of a wine begins in the vineyard, it’s no surprise that the barrels we’ve selected for this wine come from exceptional sites in the heart of Napa Valley. The wine is sourced entirely from vineyards located in the Rutherford American Viticultural Area (AVA): Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III and our Wildwood Estate Vineyard are located on the eastern side; our Provenance Estate Vineyard is on the west. The soils in these three vineyards are remarkably different, which adds to the terroir complexity in the wine.
"If there is an ideal vintage, this was it,” says Winemaker Trevor Durling. The 2013 growing season surpassed even the highly touted 2012 vintage in grape quality. A winter with very low rainfall was followed by a dry, warm spring and summer. These factors resulted in balanced vine canopies, good fruit set and desirably small Bordeaux-heritage grapes. The perfect weather throughout harvest gave us the luxury of waiting until the grapes reached absolute maturity, resulting in ripe, concentrated flavors.
After hand harvesting the fruit and then hand sorting it twice at the winery, we gently destemmed the grapes to retain at least 60 percent whole berries. Three days of cold soaking before fermentation gently extracted the opulent color and flavors from the skins. Two to three weeks of skin contact developed varietal expression while, in-barrel malolactic fermentation rounded the acidity. Aging in a high percentage of new oak barrels married the rich Cabernet Sauvignon flavors with warm oak tones.
