Vintage 2014
Wine Type Red
Varietal Cabernet Sauvignon
Region Napa Valley
Winemaker Chris Cooney and Trevor Durling

The wine for this exclusive bottling was selected from our favorite barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from Napa Valley’s Rutherford AVA. Hand sorting the grapes on tables at the winery, both before and after destemming, ensured the highest quality. Definitely cellar worthy, this wine will gain complexity for more than a decade and will then remain on a plateau for many more years. To enjoy it in its youth, decant this Cabernet Sauvignon and let it breathe to release the full spectrum of flavors and textures.

“A fresh and focused cabernet sauvignon with blackcurrant and berry character. Full body, tight and precise. Long finish. Needs a year or two to soften. Drink in 2020.” - James Suckling, December 2017

91 Points - Wine Advocate

“Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Select opens with fresh black berries and crushed blueberries plus hints of lavender, violets, cigar box and cloves. Medium to full-bodied, the palate packs in the youthful, perfumed black berry flavors with a firm backbone of grainy tannins and great freshness, finishing long. It should age well!” - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, October 2017

Tasting Notes

Our 2014 Barrel-Select Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon offers a compelling and refined expression of the famous Rutherford appellation. By selecting the finest barrels of the vintage—ones that represent different soils, exposures and clones—we created a wine with deft balance and complex flavors. Shades of rose petal and minerals add interest to the generous blackberry and sweet black currant aromas. Aging in new French oak barrels integrated tones of toasty vanilla-caramel. The unctuous flavors are weighty and richly textured, with dark-fruit notes that linger on and on. The tannins are chewy and expansive mid-palate, and then turn finely textured on the Rutherford Dust finish.

Vineyard Notes

Since the quality of a wine begins in the vineyard, it’s no surprise that the barrels we’ve selected for this limited bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon are from exceptional sites in the Rutherford AVA. This appellation, in the center of Napa Valley, is renowned for producing extremely complex, balanced Bordeaux-heritage wines. Our wine is sourced from four vineyards: 55 percent from Starr Vineyard; 27 percent from our Wildwood Estate Vineyard; 18 percent from our Hewitt Estate Vineyard on the west side; and one percent from Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges II1. The soils in these four vineyards are remarkably different, which adds to the terroir complexity in the wine.

Vintage Notes

Dry, early and shaking is how 2014 will be remembered in Napa Valley, yet it had a silver lining with small, concentrated berries and high quality. February’s rains brought the total rainfall up from low to adequate”, helping to relieve three years of drought conditions. Warm temperatures promoted early budbreak in spring and accelerated grape maturation. Just as harvest began, a dramatic 6.0 earthquake shook Napa Valley awake on August 24; Provenance was fortunate to come through unscathed. We finished the very compact, plentiful harvest by mid-October and celebrated the vintage’s “ripened to perfection” grapes.

Winemaking Notes

After hand harvesting the fruit and then hand sorting it twice at the winery, we gently destemmed the grapes to retain at least 60 percent whole berries. Three days of cold soaking before fermentation gently extracted the opulent color and flavors from the skins. Two to three weeks of skin contact developed varietal expression while, in-barrel malolactic fermentation rounded the acidity. Aging in a high percentage of new oak barrels married the rich Cabernet Sauvignon flavors with warm oak tones.
