The Barrel Selection Chardonnay is a small bottling of the most expressive barrel lots in a given vintage. The 2013 Barrel Selection Chardonnay is an elegant homage to the beautiful aromatics and flavor characteristics Chardonnay exhibits when the fruit is allowed to express itself.
"The 2013 Chardonnay Barrel Selection sees about 50% new oak. It exhibits plenty of tropical fruit along with crisp, elegant lemon zest and apple notes. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity for focus and uplift, it should drink well for 2-3 years." - Robert Parker, October 2014
Beautifully aromatic, the 2013 Barrel Selection Chardonnay offers honeysuckle, lemon meringue, tangerine oil and lemon zest aromas. The oak is well-integrated and the wine is rich in flavor and mouthfeel, but it achieves balanced elegance with crisp acidity and a wonderful Elderflower finish.
The 2013 Barrel Selection Chardonnay was crafted with grapes grown on Stanly Ranch Vineyard, a relatively cool vineyard in the Carneros AVA in southern Napa Valley. Fog helps to cool the vineyard, located just a half-mile north of the San Pablo Bay, throughout the growing season, allowing for ideal preservation of acidity. Stanly Ranch consistently produces Chardonnay ideal for our style of winemaking with crisp fruit flavors and bright acidity.
The 2013 vintage began with a warm, dry spring that brought early bud break and created ideal conditions for flowering and fruit set. With no surprises throughout the growing season, temperatures were consistently favorable and even, resulting in notably healthy vines as fruit went through veraison and started ripening. The overall dry season made for an early and condensed harvest, and was ideal for producing fresh Chardonnay.
The Barrel Selection Chardonnay is a small bottling of the most expressive barrel lots in a given vintage. The winemaking hand remains light with 50% of the wine fermented and aged in low impact French oak barrels and the remaining 50% in seasoned French oak. This specific barrel treatment helps preserve the essential purity of the fruit while adding subtle notes of oak complexity. The 2013 vintage, as usual, did not undergo malolactic fermentation to further maintain the fruit’s natural acidity and aromatic freshness. The wine was bottled after just nine months of maturation with a weekly batonnage, putting the yeast lees in suspension in order to release subtle aromatics, increase the mouthfeel and prevent reduction.
