Rich in blackberry and blueberry with a lingering hint of baking spice, this estate grown wine is big and dense but with the signature elegance of our Stags’ Leap vineyards.
"This is very of-the-region with the
Stags Leap District spice, wet earth
and dark berry character. Full body,
yet linear and tight with plenty of
structure and depth. Already
fascinating to drink but better in
2020." - James Suckling
A proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Merlot, the 2015 Twelve Falls is a dark, elegant and powerfully rich red wine, with layers of lifted dark berry fruits. Aromas and flavors of blackberry, charred strawberry, coconut, coffee, holiday spiced cake, along with perfumed notes of cinnamon and clove, all come together in the glass. Secondary notes of tobacco leaf and wild violet tantalize your senses while the mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, despite the pronounced flavors, and finishes with tremendous length and finesse. The tannins are dense and concentrated, reflective of the estate’s ability to combine power with elegance. This wine will continue to develop beautifully as it ages in the cellar.
Crafted as an ode to our own Stags’ Leap Winery Estate Vineyards, Twelve Falls is a red blend that beautifully mimics the varietal composition of these plantings. Year after year, the blocks surrounding the historic Manor House produce 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petite Sirah and 10% Merlot fruit, and the elegant Twelve Falls is a perfect reflection of this assemblage. This tribute red blend showcases a barrel selection of estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petite Sirah. The hand selected Petite Sirah block consistently produces fruit most expressive of the varietal’s classic floral, spicy and blue fruit characteristics.
After three years of plentiful harvests, the 2015 vintage resulted in a less abundant crop, but the quality remained exceptional. The mild, dry spring conditions promoted an early bud-break and minimal heat during summer allowed the fruit to ripen at a steady pace through picking, which began a few days earlier than 2014. The drier-than-normal conditions contributed to the smaller berry size and low yields, resulting in wines with outstanding concentration and flavor, making the overall season ideal for producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Merlot of wonderful quality
Maceration followed suit for each of the three varieties, which allowed Winemaker Christophe Paubert to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each variety to its maximum potential. The Cabernet Sauvignon fermented and aged in high quality new French oak barrels for 18 months. The Merlot went to seasoned French oak and the Petite Sirah in neutral American oak. The final assemblage was blended just prior to bottling.
