Vintage 2010
Wine Type Red
Varietal Red Wine Blend
Region Napa Valley
Winemaker Christophe Paubert

The inaugural vintage of Twelve Falls, this 2010 red blend is big and complex, but with the signature elegance and finesse of our Estate Vineyards.

Every winter during the rainy season, small “falls” cascade down the Stags Leap palisades, which are the backdrop to the estate. On any given winter day, the winery staff have counted up to twelve visible falls at one time. “Twelve Falls” pays homage to the water source and natural erosion that result from these falls, and in the end nourish and feed the fruit that grows.

94+ Points - Wine Advocate

"This cuvee possesses powerful tannins (no doubt because of the Petite Sirah) as well as a black/purple color, and a big, sweet nose of incense, camphor, blueberry and blackberry liqueur. This is a big, over-sized, powerful, tannic but brilliantly well-balanced wine that is available at a very attractive price. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it over the following three decades." - Robert Parker, October 2013

Tasting Notes

The inaugural vintage of Twelve Falls is deep black cherry in color, opening with generous aromas of blackberry pie, vanilla, cinnamon and white pepper, and accented by subtle floral notes that are telling of the Petite Sirah. Deep red fruit flavors linger on the palate through the long finish and are supported by wonderful gingerbread and molasses spices. Lifted by a subtle minerality, this 2010 red blend is big and complex, but with the signature elegance and finesse of our Estate Vineyards.

Vineyard Notes

Crafted as an ode to our own Stags’ Leap Winery estate vineyards, Twelve Falls is a red blend that beautifully mimics the varietal composition of the plantings on the estate. Year after year the blocks surrounding the historic Manor House produce 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petite Sirah and 10% Merlot fruit, and the elegant blend of Twelve Falls is a perfect reflection of this assemblage. 2010 marks the inaugural release of this tribute red blend, which showcases a combination of fruit from the winery’s other celebrated Estate wines: The Leap, Ne Cede Malis and Block 20.

Vintage Notes

The 2010 growing season was ideal for producing an elegant red blend, as the cooler temperatures allowed for great aromatic freshness and ideal acid development in the grapes. The 2010 growing season was long and mild with ideal temperatures for perfect ripening and full development of great aromatics and rich and soft tannins. Rainfall returned to Napa Valley after three dry years, lengthening each stage of growth -- bud break, flowering and fruit-set -- by nearly two weeks. The relatively cool growing season coupled with the unexpected heat spikes in late summer made for a shortened harvest, but the resulting lower yields of wine were concentrated, elegant and structured.

Winemaking Notes

Twelve Falls is a hand-selected barrel selection of the finest blocks in the 2010 vintage, designed to represent the best of the winery. This inaugural blend was carefully chosen, fermented separately in French oak barrels for 18 months and blended just prior to bottling. Keeping the lots separate allows Winemaker Christophe Paubert to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each to its maximum potential and complexity.
