The 2011 Twelve Falls red blend is big and complex, but with the signature elegance and finesse of our Estate Vineyards.
Every winter during the rainy season, small “falls” cascade down the Stags Leap palisades, which are the backdrop to the estate. On any given winter day, the winery staff have counted up to twelve visible falls at one time. “Twelve Falls” pays homage to the water source and natural erosion that result from these falls, and in the end nourish and feed the fruit that grows.
The 2011 Twelve Falls is lush and opulent in blackberry, black raspberry, black cherry, vanilla and white pepper. The dark, pure fruit flavors linger through the long finish and are enhanced by wonderful molasses and nutmeg spices, telling of the Petite Sirah. This inimitable red blend is powerful and structured for aging, but softly beautiful and complex now.
Crafted as an ode to our own Stags’ Leap Winery estate vineyards, Twelve Falls is a red blend that beautifully mimics the varietal composition of these plantings. Year after year, the blocks surrounding the historic Manor House produce 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petite Sirah and 10% Merlot fruit, and the elegant blend of Twelve Falls is a perfect reflection of this assemblage. This tribute red blend showcases a barrel selection of estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and Petite Sirah from Block 4. This hand selected Petite Sirah block consistently produces fruit most expressive of the varietal’s classic floral, spicy and blue fruit characteristics.
The 2011 vintage began with a wet winter and spring that delayed bloom and fruit set, resulting in lower yields in many parts of the region. Cool temperatures delayed vine development by several weeks, a timetable that continued through the lengthy, cooler-than-usual summer season. Few high heat events occurred at any point in 2011, and the vintage resulted in wines that foremost broadcast fruit with deft tannins. Tasked with one of the more challenging vintages of recent memory, meticulous farming skills were tested and rigorous cluster selections were implemented, and our efforts were ultimately rewarded with elegant wines.
Maceration followed suit for each of the three varietals, which allowed Winemaker Christophe Paubert to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each varietal to its maximum potential. This unique composition was carefully chosen and fermented separately in high quality French oak barrels for 18 months. The Cabernet Sauvignon aged in new French oak barrels while the Petite Sirah and Merlot went to seasoned French oak. The final wine was blended just prior to bottling.
