The 2012 Stags' Leap Twelve Falls Red Blend Napa Valley blend is rich in blackberry and blueberry with a lingering hint of baking spices. This wine is big and complex, but with the signature elegance and finesse of our Estate Vineyards.
Every winter during the rainy season, small “falls” cascade down the Stags Leap palisades, which are the backdrop to the estate. On any given winter day, the winery staff have counted up to twelve visible falls at one time. “Twelve Falls” pays homage to the water source and natural erosion that result from these falls, and in the end nourish and feed the fruit that grows.
The 2012 Twelve Falls is beautiful with allure and yet packed with power and intensity. Rich in blackberry and blueberry with a lingering hint of baking spice, this estate grown wine is big and dense but with the signature elegance of our Stags’ Leap vineyards. Supported by rich, long tannins, this wine is enjoyable now and will cellar gracefully for many years to come.
Crafted as an ode to our own Stags’ Leap Winery Estate Vineyards, Twelve Falls is a red blend that beautifully mimics the varietal composition of these plantings. Year after year, the blocks surrounding the historic Manor House produce 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petite Sirah and 10% Merlot fruit, and the elegant Twelve Falls is a perfect reflection of this assemblage. This tribute red blend showcases a barrel selection of estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and Petite Sirah from Block 4. This hand selected Petite Sirah block consistently produces fruit most expressive of the varietal’s classic floral, spicy and blue fruit characteristics.
The 2012 vintage will be remembered for its abundance of high-quality fruit. The season began with exceptional, moderate weather that brought virtually no harm to the grapes all the way through fruit-set, and the long, mild days continued well into the summer. A cooler-than-normal period hit at the end of September, which allowed for the preservation of ideal fruit aromatics, freshness and natural acidity.
Maceration followed suit for each of the three varietals, which allowed Winemaker Christophe Paubert to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each varietal to its maximum potential. This unique composition was carefully chosen and fermented separately in high quality French oak barrels for 18 months. The Cabernet Sauvignon aged in new French oak barrels while the Petite Sirah and Merlot went to seasoned French oak.
