The 2014 Stags' Leap Twelve Falls Red Blend Napa Valley blend is rich in blackberry and blueberry with a lingering hint of holiday baking spices. This wine is big and complex, but with the signature elegance and finesse of our Estate Vineyards.
Every winter during the rainy season, small “falls” cascade down the Stags Leap palisades, which are the backdrop to the estate. On any given winter day, the winery staff have counted up to twelve visible falls at one time. “Twelve Falls” pays homage to the water source and natural erosion that result from these falls, and in the end nourish and feed the fruit that grows.
"This is very of-the-region with the
Stags Leap District spice, wet earth
and dark berry character. Full body,
yet linear and tight with plenty of
structure and depth. Already
fascinating to drink but better in
2020." - James Suckling, December 2017
"A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot and 10% Merlot, the 2014 Proprietary Red Twelve Falls Estate has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of pure cassis, crushed blackberries and mulberries with hints of cigar boxes, bay leaves, forest floor and black pepper. Medium-bodied, finely constructed and with a firm backbone of chunky tannins and lively acid, it delivers understated, earthy intensity and a good long finish. " - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, October 2017
A proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Merlot, the 2014 Twelve Falls is an elegant and powerfully rich red wine, with layers of dark fruits. Aromas and flavors of blueberry, blackberry, holiday baking spices, and savory dried herbs, along with white pepper, and a beautiful freshness, all come together in the glass. The mouthfeel is silky and delicate despite the powerful flavors and finishes with tremendous length and finesse. Reflective of the estate’s ability to combine power with elegance, this wine will continue to meld beautifully together in the cellar.
Crafted as an ode to our own Stags’ Leap Winery Estate Vineyards, Twelve Falls is a red blend that beautifully mimics the varietal composition of these plantings. Year after year, the blocks surrounding the historic Manor House produce 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petite Sirah and 10% Merlot fruit, and the elegant Twelve Falls is a perfect reflection of this assemblage. This tribute red blend showcases a barrel selection of estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petite Sirah. The hand selected Petite Sirah block consistently produces fruit most expressive of the varietal’s classic floral, spicy and blue fruit characteristics.
Despite drought conditions, the 2014 vintage proved to be ideal, with excellent quality reminiscent of 2012 and 2013. The winter was one of the driest on record in California, but substantial rains in early spring were timely and set up the vines for a strong start. Summer temperatures were milder than expected with no extremes, and after early budbreak and verasion, harvest was unusually early in 2014.
Maceration followed suit for each of the three varieties, which allowed Winemaker Christophe Paubert to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each variety to its maximum potential. The Cabernet Sauvignon fermented and aged in high quality new French oak barrels for 18 months. The Merlot went to seasoned French oak and the Petite Sirah in neutral American oak. The final assemblage was blended just prior to bottling.
