93+ points - Wine Advocate

"Pauillac-like, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon from Coombsville displays oodles of earth, forest floor, cedar wood, fruitcake, and plenty of blackcurrant and smoky notes. It is rich, full-bodied, and capable of lasting another two decades or more. In fact, I would try to keep it in the cellar for another 3-4 years before drinking it." - Robert Parker, December 2016

91 points - Wine & Spirits

“Christophe Paubert sources most of the fruit for this wine from the Garvey Vineyard, blending it with other vineyards in Coombsville. That fruit from the cool, southern end of the Napa Valley maintained its freshness even as it developed plenty of intensity in 2013. The wine feels saturated with fruit and mineral-rich tannins, the initial oakiness of the aroma giving way to sweet cherry scents. Smoky and powerful, this is a wine to decant; open it over the next several years to serve with steak.” - Josh Greene, February 2017

Tasting Notes

More savory than fruity upon immediate opening, the 2013 Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon is a compelling expression of this relatively cooler appellation.  Juicy, fresh flavors of cassis and plum are later revealed on the palate.  Dark fruit layers and dry herb notes continue to open up over time in the glass. The wine is concentrated, complex and velvety with tannins that are persistent but very fine grained.

Vineyard Notes

Winemaker Christophe Paubert has always admired the Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from Coombsville for its concentration and fresh aromatics. Year after year the appellation yields some of the most concentrated and distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley. This wine captures a pure expression of Napa’s southeastern corner and its unique elevation and cooler terroir. The majority of the blend comes from Garvey Vineyard, and long-standing relationships with some of the most highly regarded growers in Coombsville ensure this wine exemplifies the excellent structure, concentrated fresh flavors and significant tannins of this celebrated appellation.

Vintage Notes

The 2013 vintage began with a warm, dry spring that brought early bud break and created ideal conditions for flowering and fruit set. With no surprises throughout the growing season, temperatures were consistently favorable and even, resulting in notably healthy vines as fruit went through veraison and started ripening. The overall dry season made for an early and condensed harvest, and was ideal for producing a fresh Cabernet Sauvignon.

Winemaking Notes

This small bottling of Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon is a barrel selection of the most expressive lots from this highly regarded appellation.  This inaugural blend was fermented separately in French oak barrels (75% new) for 18 months and blended just prior to bottling.  Custom-toasted, very low impact barrels of new French oak were hand-selected, which supported the wine during maturation but did not impart excessive flavors.  Keeping the lots separate throughout fermentation and aging allowed Christophe to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each to its maximum potential and complexity.
